Guidelines for implementation of the ASHA programme were issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in 2006. The original guidelines were supplemented by several orders issued by the MOHFW to communicate policy modifications to the states. The programme has evolved substantially in the past seven years. In the journey so far, there is a better understanding of the programme through learning from the experiences of the implementers and various stakeholders, assessments and evaluations. The revised guidelines build on the original guidelines and various orders issued in the period 2006–2012.
